  • Bugbee & Conkle to Hold Training Session on Hiring and Firing Employees for WEN

    On November 6, 2013 Carolyn Davis and Janelle Matuszak will hold a one hour training session for WEN (Women’s Entrepreneurial Network). This free training session will run from 1:00 to 2:00 at the office of Bugbee & Conkle at 405 Madison Ave., Toledo, Ohio  and will focus on the basics of hiring and firing employees.

  • Claimant Must Establish A Causal Relationship Between Allowed Conditions and Disability

    In State ex rel. Staples The Office Superstore East, Inc., 2013-Ohio-4339, the Court of Appeals emphasized that conditions that are bases for disability must be allowed conditions in the claim. This claim was allowed for left fibular fracture and peroneal tendonitis, left side. Claimant’s physician restricted her to sedentary employment due to developed low back pain.

  • Supreme Court Finds Estate Entitled to Loss of Use Benefits Not to Exceed 2 Years

    In State ex rel. Estate of Szirzki v. Bureau of Work. Comp., 2013-Ohio-4007, the Ohio Supreme Court determined a deceased claimant’s estate could not receive the full 850 weeks of loss of use benefits.  The decedent suffered work related injuries resulting in a 16-year near vegetative state and quadriplegia.  After the decedent’s death, his estate moved the Commission for scheduled loss benefits.

  • Bureau Distributes Final Rebates

    As part of the Bureau’s three-part “Billion Back” rebate plan, the Bureau distributed its final $81.7 million in rebates to state fund employers.  On October 4, 2013, the Bureau mailed checks to private employers which participated in the “Group Retrospective Rating” program.  The Billion Back plan is designed, in part, to modernize the Bureau’s premium collection model as a prospective payment system.  Read more here.
