Yesterday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit upheld same-sex marriage bans in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The court’s 2-1 decision creates a split among the nation’s federal courts of appeals on the same-sex marriage issue. Although the U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to hear appeals of decisions striking down same-sex marriage bans, critics believe the 6th Circuit’s decision will force the Supreme Court to address the issue.
